Second Division Star Gallery

The following 44 players represent a cross section of some of the most prominent players who were either with Second Division clubs in 1969-70 or have been transferred to teams there during the close season. There are two players from each Second Division club.

The formation of the division in 1892-93 was a most important step in the expansion of the Football League because the title “First Division” only applied from that season onwards when two divisions operated.

Before that the one division had simply been called “The Football League” from the date it started in 1888.

The Second Division has played a full part in the development of the game in this country and it is an acknowledged fact that the strength of the clubs in it compares favourably with many Continental First
Division teams.

As an example this last season Swindon Town won the Anglo-Italian Cup in a competition which embraced leading first Division clubs from both countries.

  1. Some good old pro’s on here – Trevor Hockey, Shilton (looks dodgy lol) Nish and ‘Wor Malcolm’ before he was King of Geordie land…Millwalls Kitchener and Possee – legends at The Den…Big Ron with a head of hair, Dennis Rofe @ Orient, Don Rodgers @ Swindon, El Tel and Rodders @ QPR, Tony Currie at The blades and Jim Montogomery and Colin Todd at Sunderland…what a great collection of players…and this was the 2nd division!

  2. Saw many of these players and the best was undoubtably Ken Wagstaff.
